Greening Your Office

Date: Tuesday, November 7, 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Location: Cook+Fox Architects (641 6th Avenue, 8th Floor)

Are you interested in learning how to take the first step in making your office “green”? Join o2NYC for a discussion on eco-friendly strategies in the workplace. This event will begin with a tour of Cook+Fox Architects, whose new office in Chelsea is striving to achieve a Platinum rating from the US Green Building Council under LEED for Commercial Interiors. See the office’s new green roof and learn about materials, indoor air quality, energy conservation and other green strategies, as well as in-house policies for purchasing, printing, staff education, etc. The tour will be followed by an open discussion on how to lead the effort (or build on existing initiatives) in your own office.

Open Forum on Droog Design with o2NYC, at the Museum of Arts & Design

Date: Thursday, October 5, 2006 6:00 PM

Location: Museum of Arts & Design (40 West 53rd St, New York, NY)

o2NYC played host, in collaboration with the Museum of Arts & Design, to an open forum on internationally renowned Dutch design consortium, Droog Design. Jennifer van der Meer, o2NYC's Chair, led a discussion on how Droog’s alternative vision of design challenges our thinking about materiality, physicality, and consumption, and the implications it has for sustainable design. Attendees were encouraged to share their response to the exhibition.

A reception sponsored by Risqué, a New York City-based design research consultancy, followed the discussion.

o2NYC had a great turnout for our July Meeting-Reception at Bitforms Gallery, where people enjoyed fine organic wine served by Scott Pactor, owner (and wine connoisseur) of Appellation Wine Company. Scott offered a sampling of organic, sustainable, and biodynamic wines from France, Austria, and Chile, which were accompanied by an assortment of Green and Black’s premium organic chocolates. And the dynamic exhibit of award-winning work by Bjoern Schuelke and R. Luke Dubois’s solar kinetic exhibit, made for a very dynamic and successful venue.

HauteGREEN 2006

From all accounts, HauteGREEN was a great success!

The exhibit at 70 North 6th in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, ran from May 20th through its culmination with a reception the evening of May 22nd, which was attended by some 700 people, including designers, ICFF-goers, and press from all over the world. It showcased the best in sustainable design, from furniture, lighting, and housewares, to fashion and accessories. Each of the 40 pieces on exhibit was chosen from over 200 submissions, by jurors Kimberly Oliver, Principal of American Success Machinery, Graham Hill, founder of treehugger.com, and well-known design writer, Aric Chen. On Saturday, Kakee Scott organized a discussion with about eight of the featured designers, which focused on their work, design process, and strategies to further enable sustainability.

Some good news to report is that we expect to get some great coverage for the exhibit in coming months, from prominent design publications including Dwell, Blueprint, the London Observer, and Surface. Please check the site for updates on any related articles that may be available.

Of course, HauteGREEN would not have even been possible without the selfless efforts of so many people, so we would like to thank Bart Bettencourt, Kimberly Oliver, and Rebecca Silver, who collaborated in producing the exhibit. And we would also like to thank Kakee, for planning the discussion on green design on opening day, Warren for his great design for the HauteGREEN website, and Alice, Ben, Chris, Colleen, Danny, Hope, Kelli, Kiel, Martin, Matt, Maureen, and Rich, for putting in long volunteer hours to make it all happen.
